From Lee Russell, Tour of Duty advisor:

The typical combat Infantry sergeant in Vietnam was in his early twenties, maybe slightly older. Early thirties tops. Older than that, he'd have a higher rank and a non-combat assignment. Probably thinking of the "Gardens [of Stone]" movie, TOD hired an older actor than they should have (Knox) for the role. (In the original script, Anderson held the same rank as Hazard, Sergeant First Class. This was correctly reduced to Staff Sergeant in the pilot, probably the highest NCO rank usually seen in the field.)
